Barcelonas Floor Sebastian Erras in collaboration with Pixartprinting

The City of Marvels is how writer Eduardo Mendoza called the coolest city of the Mediterranean in one of his novels. The book is set at the turn of the 20th century, a time in which Barcelona boomed and became what it is today. A time in which factories’ chimneys grew side by side with the Sagrada Familia’s towers. That tumultuous era left its signature on thousands of floors in the city – one of its marvels. Pavements laid in churches, palaces and avenues form an amazing mosaic. “These floors are addictive”, says José Jóvena, creator with Elisabet Martínez of Tile Addiction. The two have uploaded hundreds of pictures of Barcelona’s floors on Instagram. Recently, they discovered that a German photographer, Sebastian Erras, shared their passion for floors. Erras had done projects on Parisian floors and Venetian floors They thought he would go crazy with Barcelona’s floors and invited him to see them.

The Overlook Mansion

The Overlook Mansion, also known as Seely’s Castle, was built between 1912 and 1914. The original owner of the property was a man by the name of Fred Loring Seely. Seely lived in the castle with his family until his death in 1942. After that, his wife sold the property. Over the following decades, the mansion was alternatively occupied by families, a college, and a Christian ministry.

The place could be described as opulent. The interior features high ceilings, stained-glass windows, secret passageways, and much more. In the late 1970s the Overlook Christian Ministry was the castle’s main tenant. It’s said that this particular ministry was a big believer in speaking in tongues. Some believe that unholy rituals may have been performed by the ministry’s most extreme practitioners. The property is now owned by an unnamed religious group that has banned access to outside visitors. On 13 June 1919, almost five months after her murder, Rosa Luxemburg was symbolically buried in Berlin’s Friedrichsfelde Cemetery, next to Karl Liebknecht and the other victims of the January fighting. The funeral procession acted as a quiet, peaceful protest by the fledgling Communist Party and other left-wingers against the violence and persecution which was at that time still ongoing. In attendance were the leaders of the Communist Party, Rosa’s friends and relatives, including her brother Jozef and nephew Kazimir, then aged five.

Top: Banner at the funeral bearing Rosa’s last written words: ‘I was, I am, I shall be!’
